Toronto’s Greasemarks have long been a word of mouth band. Word of mouth for their out-of-control-rockabilly shows landed them in L.A. last December to record their debut full length at the WILD RECORDS studio. With Omar Romeroat the controls all twelve original tracks were recorded live to tape in one day.
The boys skipped town before the word “overdubs” could be uttered. Like the esoteric 50’s recordings that inform their music, this disc is lightning captured in a bottle: wild guitar, & a completely unhinged singer, barely being held down by the primitive rhythm.
“Greasemarks” is the soundtrack to a pulp novel the author was afraid to attach his real name to. Ten of the tracks were penned by the band with unreleased tracks, “Knock ‘Em Down” & “You come Undone” offered by Canadian roots icons Big Rude Jake and Ronnie Hayward. Rounding out the straight rockabilly tracks, theres some primal beat boppers: “Pickin’ Time” & “Meatshakes”, and then the hyper rock’n’roll number, “Jungle Savage Suzie”.
“Black Dice” is an instrumental nod to the band’s favourite, Toronto bar and filthy Link Wray tones. “Rattlesnake” channels Jimmy Wages feeling weird after a night on the good stuff, and “Wolf Trash” is a track no ones going to own up to.
In the last few years, Greasemarks have appeared at all the major North American Rockabilly festivals including Viva Las Vegas, the Nashville Boogie, New England Shake Up & Red, Hot and Blue, leaving a raw and realized impression on all the venues. They’re heading to Europe in 2019, but are equally looking forward to their next night at the Black Dice; partying with Toronto’s thirty-strong-rockabillyfaithful, and likely sending another piece of vintage gear to the repair guy, or scrap heap.
Join the Greasemarks on a chaotic rock and roll ride through savage women, switchblades and swingin’ fists on their WILD RECORDS debut!
“Canada can be a very, very cold place. Thats why it needed a band to come along and melt the ice and with with WILD sizzling hot Rock’n’Roll music. That band is Greasemarks, if you like your Rock’n’Roll to have power, soul & WILD energy, this record is for you! – Reb Kennedy, owner of WILD Records
“Greasemarks are the band holdin’ the best reefer” – Big Rude Jak
